WASHINGTON (AP) — The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday rejected an application from pharmaceutical companies that could make Viagra cheaper and be sold in the United States.
The FDA said it will allow Pfizer Inc., its leading importer and maker of impotence drugs, to sell the drug to more than 5 million men in the United States. It also said it would allow men who already have low blood pressure to treat it to get the medication through a doctor.
The FDA rejected the application because it included several risks, including a potential risk of stroke and kidney disease, and the company could not prove that it has the drugs' safety and effectiveness.
Pfizer said it had not found any adverse reactions in the study. The company did not say when the drug would be made available. Pfizer said it expects to launch the drug in the spring of 2018.
Pfizer spokesman Frank D’Amelio said he was “relaxed” in responding to the FDA’s rejection. In a statement, he said, “Pfizer has been transparent in making this safety and efficacy decision.”
But he said there are no studies to show the drug will have any effect on the heart.
In a statement, the company said that in a study of its Viagra-type impotence drug, researchers found no effect on the heart. They did find that men taking the drug had a lower risk of dying from heart disease.
Pfizer spokesman Dan Quayle said in a statement, “Pfizer is committed to safety, efficacy and quality control of Viagra and has made every effort to ensure this product is available and affordable to all.
“Our commitment to quality and safety is reflected in Pfizer’s commitment to patient welfare and the U. patent system, which we are committed to protecting,” he said. “Pfizer has a responsibility to make sure men get the care they need.”
VIAGRA is used to treat erectile dysfunction. VIAGRA was first approved by the FDA in 1998 and is sold under the brand name Sildenafil. Viagra works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, increasing blood flow, and helping to achieve and maintain an erection. The drug is not approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Viagra has been linked to strokes, heart attacks, and some types of dementia.
Viagra is one of the world’s top-selling impotence drugs, according to the United States Food and Drug Administration. The drug was first sold in 1998 under the brand name Revatio.
Viagra, the active ingredient in Revatio, has been approved by the FDA for over-the-counter use in the United States, but the drug is not covered by the drug-making program in the United States.
Pfizer said Friday it would sell Revatio to more than 3 million men nationwide.
The FDA said it would approve Pfizer’s application before the company was approved, and it expected to launch it by the summer of 2018. It will only be available in the United States through the U. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA approved Viagra in October in a lab-test study in the men’s health field.
Pfizer said the drug’s safety and effectiveness have been established through studies on its drug. It has been found to be safe and effective in patients with heart disease and in healthy subjects.
The drug’s maker, GlaxoSmithKline PLC, said Friday its application for approval was pending before the FDA in February. Glaxo said it had not received a final decision on the drug’s safety or effectiveness.
